Then & Now: The Stories Behind 20 Years of Student Writing

Throughout our anniversary year, we’re reconnecting with students, parents, and teachers who have helped shape One World and sharing where their journeys have taken them.

And after 20 years of transforming young lives across DC, we’re putting down roots through the Writing Home Project—creating a long-term home for One World’s students and programs.

This month, meet One World alum Kamari.

THEN
9th Grade

NOW
Freshman, Hampton University

When Kamari joined One World Education as a ninth grader, she didn’t expect to discover a skill that would shape her future.

Through One World, she researched and presented on issues that mattered to her, from social media’s impact on teenage body image to the school-to-prison pipeline.

She won first place in One World’s Board presentation competition both years she participated, earning her first scholarships and opportunities to connect with people and organizations beyond her school community.

“One World showed me that knowing how to communicate and present yourself is a skill that can generate opportunities. It helped me realize how powerful my own voice is.”

Now, Kamari is beginning her freshman year in college after graduating as one of two Black valedictorians in her high school class and earning a full scholarship.

The writing and communication skills Kamari developed through One World helped prepare her for the demands of college—and everything that comes after.

Help Write One World’s Future

For 20 years, One World has helped young people like Kamari find their voices and build skills that open doors.

Now, we’re raising $250,000 through the Writing Home Project to create a long-term home for our programs, giving the next generation of young writers the space to learn, grow, and thrive.

Volunteer with One World

Right now, One World students are choosing issues they care about, researching their ideas, and preparing to share their work with an audience.

You can help them find their voice.

This fall, One World volunteers will serve as guest speakers, provide feedback on student presentations, serve as Site Challenge judges, and join us for the One World Challenge.

No special expertise is required—just your time, encouragement, and willingness to listen.
