Did you know that in 2022, there were 647 mass shootings in the United States? In July of 2022, 10,000 people had already died due to gun violence. That was  barely halfway through the year! Gun violence is everywhere, even near me. A few weeks back, there was a shooting near my local Walmart. Gun violence is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. One way gun companies can fix this is to invest in smart technology for guns. Smart gun technology and stricter gun laws would both cut down on the annual number of shootings and deaths because more gun control prevents more shootings.

Gun violence is a problem because people keep dying and getting shot. Even recently, another shooting happened in Nashville. Every day 321 people are scarred with a bullet wound, sometimes killed. According to Statista.com, there are 332 million people in the United States, yet 393 million guns. According to BBC News, the number of shooting victims has grown from 2000 to 2023. Gun violence is increasing due to laws lacking strictness.

A solution to reduce gun violence is to invest in smart gun technology. Smart gun technology is a gun that uses something called RFID radio frequency to improve gun safety. It requires passwords for guns, so kids wouldn’t be able to accidentally shoot or kill themselves or others with an adult’s weapon. Smart gun technology would also make it so that people could have some sort of lock on their guns, which could prevent gun theft, and shootings by people who aren’t authorized to have guns. Stricter laws would also help because the BBC.com article shows how loads more money has been spent on gun rights than on gun control.

When I first became aware of the shooting around my local Walmart, I was disappointed. “Yet another shooting,” I thought. Not only was I disappointed; I was scared. What if I were there? If I had heard the shots, what would I do? I live in DC, where a lot is going on. What happens if I’m in the mix? It should never be like this. People nowadays are scared to drop their kids off at school, worrying about school shooters. According to The Associated Press, one-third of adults are scared to go places because of shootings.

Gun violence is rapidly growing, and we aren’t doing much about it. To prevent gun violence, gun manufacturers should invest in smart gun technology. Together, we can fix this problem. Thank you for listening.
