Did you know that many people go outside without shoes on? When you go out without shoes, you are putting yourself at risk of contracting bad bacteria. I was eight when I found out that a family friend had passed from illness. He died from bacteria getting into his foot because he was walking outside without his shoes. Some people think that walking barefoot is healthy and should be done more, but if a grown man can get sick and die from it, kids can too. If it’s so healthy, would people be getting hurt and ill? I believe that parents should ensure their kids wear shoes outside to prevent their children from getting sick or hurt.

One major reason I believe parents should ensure that their kids wear shoes outside is to prevent their children from getting sick. When kids go outside, they are most likely playing. They don’t look at the ground. If they are playing and not looking at the ground with no shoes on, they could get sick. According to a March 8, 2019, article on Healthline.com, “You also take the chance of exposing your feet to harmful bacteria or infections when you walk barefoot, especially outside” (Rosewilson). According to an article published in 2025 post on Because International’s website, “Over 1.5 billion people suffer from soil-transmitted diseases worldwide. Without shoes, children are especially vulnerable to diseases, parasites, and injury.” There are many people in the world, and if 1.5 billion people get sick from walking without shoes, then half of them or more could die. This evidence suggests that wearing shoes outside could not only stop you and your kid from getting ill and possibly dying. Making kids wear shoes outside can prevent the risk of innocent kids getting sick and/or dying, and another thing is that they don’t get hurt, which leads us to another reason.

Dangers! Another reason I believe kids should wear shoes outside is that there are a lot of things on the ground. When you go outside, there are broken bottles, food bags, and trash on the ground. Have you ever stood on them? Imagine walking or running outside with no shoes on, and you step on a broken wine bottle. If the shoes that are made to protect your feet aren’t there, you could get seriously hurt. On June 2, 2023, an article from Time showed proof of this: “footwear provides important structural support, comfort, and variety of the estate, including sharp objects on the ground, pests, heat, and invisible germs” (Hanpt). This evidence suggests that wearing shoes outside could not only stop you and your kid from getting ill and possibly dying, but also from stepping on something and hurting yourself.

When you go out without shoes, you are putting yourself at risk of contracting bad bacteria, and children can get sick or hurt from it. Not only would it cut down costs from hospital visits, from your kid getting hurt or sick, but it will eliminate the risk of anyone dying. Putting on shoes would be better than having sick and hurt kids. I want adults to have kids to wear, I don’t want any more families to suffer because of this problem. If this problem is not addressed, more and more will suffer, whether it is from being sick or hurt.
