Culture & Global Issues Reflection Contest
What is a One World Reflection?
This is the writing student submit to publish on our website, www.oneworldeducation.org. They are the articles, stories, poems and interviews that students share about exploring and learning about culture, local and global issues. Whether inside your country, internationally or in your own neighborhood, students like you are experiencing our world outside the classroom in very powerful ways. The One World Reflection is how you share what you have explored and learned.
Why Submit a One World Reflection?
One World Education is where youth like you become a published writer! We’re empowering you to share your reflections so teenagers your age can learn from you, and you from them. Maybe you’re thinking ahead and looking for a strong resume builder. Colleges, universities and other programs will be impressed that you returned your ideas and knowledge back to a community of learning.
What happens when I Submit a One World Reflection?
We send you an e-mail within two weeks of receiving your submission. When we accept your submission, you join the One World Education Student Ambassador Community. Then, expect to see your One World Reflection showcased on our website within a few short months, and get ready to tell your family, friends and teachers! Often, we will send the One World Reflection back to you for some revisions. This is not bad – actually, it’s a good sign. It says that we will most likely accept your submission with some changes.
What is the One World Education (OWEd) Student Ambassador Community?
This community is where we showcase the students whose One World Reflections are published on our website. The OWEd Ambassador profile includes your photograph and some personal information like your favorite music, books, movies, quotes and goals. This allows students in classrooms all over the world to learn about the teenagers they are learning from in class.
What are some methods or steps I can take to get started?
Great Question! Start with these three simple questions.
1. What is the issue or topic I have explored, learned about and want to share?
2. What is my relationship to it?
3. What can I teach others?
The first question addresses the “what” and “where” of your focus. If you’re writing about exploring another culture, what was it like? Did you have an expectation of what it would be like and was your perception correct? Often, as we’re learning about others, we also learn about ourselves. Did this happen for you? Share with us how. If your issue or topic did not involve going anywhere, what experience or issue do you want to share? Did you participate in a program where you learned about something important to young people in your own neighborhood, city or another part of the world?
The second question focuses on your relationship to the topic or issue. The One World Reflection is not a report. It’s a reflection of how you are personally connected to what it is you’re writing about. We don’t want people writing about a culture or country if they haven’t visited or lived there because there’s no first hand understanding. Have you or someone close to you been affected by something that caused you to learn more about it? Are you participating in a program, workshop, organization, job or volunteer activity where you are experiencing first hand accounts of people and issues? The One World Reflection is about your relationship to a topic or issue.
The third question addresses how to balance your own experience with information that will actually teach other students about your subject. This may involve some research. One example may be that you’re writing about an experience in a homeless shelter. You should also research and share some statistical information about the larger homelessness issue in our communities, cities and around our world. A good One World Reflection will be a healthy balance of personal observation, reflection and real information.
What is the Submission Process?
It’s actually pretty easy. By now you’ve read some of the One World Reflections already posted on the site. Reviewing the submissions we have already accepted is a good start. But don’t worry, we know yours may be totally different, and we want that!
The Reflection Checklist on the next page will guide you in outlining your One World Reflection. After you have written your One World Reflection, complete the OWEd Student Ambassador profile questions and upload your One World Reflection.
