Key Elements of a One World Reflection: Getting it Ready to Publish
IDEAS: Does the reflection capture the spirit of a One World Experience by responding to one of these essential questions?
• How have I been changed or affected by my own culture’s norms and expectations or by my experience with a culture other than my own?
• How have I or other youth been changed or affected by a local or global issue?
• Skillfully works through all aspects of the essential question, thoughtfully expressing a One World Experience.
• Explores the connection between a personal experience and a broader theme (i.e., local to global; self to others)
INFORMATION:Does the reflection provide a level of description, detail, background information, and facts to inform and educate the reader about the culture or issue being explored?
• Sophisticated, creative and consistent use of descriptive language to provide imagery in the reflection
• Variety of supporting details are consistently used and are both relevant and interesting
• Excellent background information provided and is factual and accurate with no exception
VOICE: Does the presence of the writer on the page allow the reader to feel connected to the writer?
• Written in 1st person
• Speaks in a way that is authentic, honest and straightforward
• Conveys internal feelings and ideas with depth
ORGANIZATION: Does the reflection possess a clear and logical internal structure that supports the One World Experience being shared?
• Engaging introduction successfully draws reader into the Reflection and sets the tone
• Strong conclusion leaves reader with a sense of closure and/or provokes thought
• Thoughtful transitions clearly connect ideas and paragraphs
CONVENTIONS: Does the reflection follow standard rules of grammar; proper mechanics; usage; and formatting requirements?
• Contains no errors except those made with stylistic flair
• Meets all formatting requirements; 12 point font; double-spaced; minimum 900 words, maximum 1500 words
