City Kids
One World Education became a partner of the City Kids Wilderness Program in 2008. City Kids sends DC middle and high school students from underserved communities to Wyoming for wilderness-based summer programs. OWEd has designed and delivered over 15 individual Learn-Shops to these students on topics such as Youth Leadership, Reflective Writing, Career Development and Goals Orientation.
OWEd's Community Program team also developed writing journals for 75 City Kids participants. The journals developed by OWEd allow students to write about their learning experiences and practice literacy skills every day over the summer while away from the classroom. This literacy implementation is a great addition to the City Kids Program, as approximately 75 percent of these students read and write below grade level.
City Kids offers
extraordinary outdoor adventure experiences for little or no cost to
eligible children living in the greater Washington D.C. area. City Kids
programs take place primarily in the Maryland countryside and Jackson
Hole, Wyoming. Participants leave the familiar urban environment and
discover the outdoors, often for the first time. By learning new
skills, meeting new friends, and developing greater self-confidence,
our students are better able to succeed in building happy, healthy, and
productive lives.
