One World Education (OWEd), a Washington, DC-based, non-profit organization, is a leader in promoting youth literacy and developing curriculum that empowers teachers and engages students.
Our mission is to prepare youth to be culturally and globally literate citizens. We achieve this by enhancing student engagement and learning through a classroom curriculum built around student writing on culture and global issues.
Our Programming
One World Writing Program
The annual One World Writing Program is open to all middle and high school students, who are invited to submit essays about culture, local, and global issues that they find important. Twelve students are chosen each year to become One World Student Ambassadors and have their reflections published on our website with aligned One World Curriculum, allowing other students to learn from their writing.
One World Curriculum
Through our website, the One World Curriculum showcases our Student Ambassador writing, aligned with standards-based curriculum for educators to teach core academic subjects and global studies. The goal of the One World Curriculum is to return this student writing back to classrooms as learning resources for other students. The One World Curriculum offers a database of project-based Learning Activities and comprehension-focused Unit Resources on a range of topics and subjects.

How We Began
One World Education got its start in 2006, when two teachers at the SEED Charter School in Southeast DC, Eric Goldstein and Emily Chiariello, developed the idea of using students’ reflective writings as the foundation for a classroom curriculum. This model proved successful, as students were more engaged and subsequently achieved at higher levels. The idea expanded from one classroom to several, and then grew city-wide, becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. During its first year, One World Education programs were successfully piloted in six DC schools, and has expanded to more than 30 schools since that time.
How We Are Funded
One World Education is funded through a combination of support from individuals, private foundations, corporations, and revenue generated from our professional development services. The base of One World Education’s financial support is individuals who value our mission and appreciate the impact of our programs. Our annual spring Youth, Culture & Learning Celebration is our primary fundraising event, bringing together educators, students, student ambassadors, administrators, and community leaders committed to education.
Thank you for supporting One World Education with your tax-deductible donation.
